SPOILER for "Sacrifice" by FalconFan SPOILER for "Sacrifice" by FalconFan
APOLOGY: For all that haven't read the book yet, I sincerely apologize for the spoiler here--and hope that it doesn't detract too much from your future reading experience...

This image was one of those that wouldn't get out of my head until I drew it. It's not a very clean drawing, and was done pretty quickly, so isn't as crisp or detailed as my usual work, and there are plenty of problems with the figures (sigh)--but the muse has quieted since I got it done, so I decided to go ahead and post it...

This is a scene that anyone who's read the novel will recognize--I won't post the narrative, as I can't black it out--but it's Ben...with his mom...

**lip quivers again**

This piece just demanded to be drawn, and was done pretty quickly in the inspiration I felt after reading (and re-reading) the scene in the book...  It was terribly sad, but I agree with you: it does draw Luke and Ben closer together!  Thank you for the comment and for the :+fav:!

I always stayed away from the EU for YEARS because of the things I heard them do to the characters and then what I read when I looked them up on Wookiepedia. I'll probably never read Legacy of the Force for this reason (as well as Jacen's turn). From what it seemed to me, Jacen should have created a completely separate Jedi order that clashes with the one Luke created. But going Sith, and then them killing off Mara. The horrors.

There are many SW fans who eschewed the EU for just those reasons, so you have lots of good company there; your suggested plotline would have been a great one, I think--if you write, you might try constructing a fan fiction that explores that story arc. You would probably have a lot of readers for it (particularly if you choose to post it over at TheForce.Net Fan Fiction forum). Thanks for taking time to share your insights and comments! :D

Haha so I have come to find out ;p

Thank you. And I have actually thought about doing that when I read up on Jacen and then most of the events of LoF....which probably means I'll be reading LoF for research purposes lol.

You would probably have a lot of readers for it (particularly if you choose to post it over at TheForce.Net Fan Fiction forum).
I would!?!! Has anyone tried writing their own retcons of LoF?? And thanks for the heads up about that website, am definitely checking it out.

Thanks for taking time to share your insights and comments! :D (Big Grin)
No problem! You have done some excellent renditions of scenes and characters from the books and movies. And thank you for the feedback as well on my idea and the encouragement.

"this hurts my soul..."

Yeah, mine too--I think that's why I ended up compelled to draw it. I bawled like a baby reading through this moment in the novel, and the scene kept haunting me, hovering in my mind's eye (the Muse is like that sometimes). I hated that Mara died--it was unnecessary to forward the story line, and it eliminated a fan-favorite character (not to mention widowing Luke and robbing Ben of his mom...). Thanks for the :+fav:, though--I greatly appreciate it!

In my mind, the EU ended after Vision of the Future/Union. No one, save for sometimes Denning, could ever come remotely close to Zahn's writing of the EU.

"In my mind, the EU ended after Vision of the Future/Union."

You are certainly not alone in that opinion! Plenty of Mara fans stopped reading the EU due to "character butchering" by other authors (I sort of feel it's happened to ALL the characters, having to be batted back and forth between so many different writers...). Thanks for sharing your thoughts, though--Zahn is a terrific SW author, no doubt!

"I nearly cried."

I DID cry, when I read this in the novel: sat there with a Kleenex pressed to my face and blubbered like a baby... Just the idea of a boy so young (and in spite of everything he'd already been through, he was still a boy), who loved his mother so dearly and was so deeply connected to her, finding her lifeless body this way... **gets all teary again, thinking about it** I suppose that was the reason for needing to draw this.

Thank you for the visit, and for the comments! :D

Same here! I sat there reading that scene and I was playing the Star Wars Episode III soundtrack (dramatic enough for anything and it'll make you cry so easily) and I was balling when Jacen got her.

No problem! I'm always here to tell you how talented and skillful you are :D

Thank you--you're very kind! This was done rather quickly, as inspiration sometimes demands; that it still manages to convey the powerful emotion is wonderful to hear! I hated what happened in that book, but I think getting it down on paper helped me deal with it somehow--thank you for taking a look, for the kind words and especially for :+fav:ing it!

When i sat down and read the book i was in tears. I sat in my room yelling at Jacen aka Darth Ceadus for killing her and then i was mad because the only person that knew who killed her was her own son but no one would believe him because he didnt have evidence. I still Yell at Jacen all the time when i see that book and i even yeled at him in the book store everyone on that isle was staring at me.. You are an extremely great artist and I love to see your work. I am hoping artists draw a picture of Ben and Vestara since i cant find many. Before i even read the fate of the Jedi series i thought it might end up as Ben and Jysella but now i bet that by the end of the fate of the jedi that Ben will propose to Vestara or something. Like Father Like Son. I first saw your pictures on Google Images and then i clicked on the picture and it took me to the force.net and then i found deviantart and i got the chance to see all the ones that i didnt see before. I Thank you and i Truly have to say you are a gifted artist. I was not blessed with that I love to write stories and you maybe can find me on fanfiction.net if you have an account. I am known for writing long comments so if that bothers you please tell me and i will shorten them up by posting a comment after a comment :) thank you :yoda:

"Sacrifice" was a heartbreaking book for all Mara fans, I'm afraid--many were simply unable to read it at all. I blubbered like a baby myself when I read it...

I, too, think Ben and Vestara will eventually end up together--I'm more convinced of this after reading the Fate of the Jedi: Vortex book. Events there point more strongly to this happening...we shall have to wait and see.

I'm so glad you like the drawings--I tend to draw the scenes that hit me emotionally, which is why I ended up doing this one, I think. Thanks so much for the kind words, and most especially for the :+fav:! :D

I am a Truck Driver. I have a 250 CD Case full of Audio Books. I particularly Love the Legacy of the force Audio Books. Jacen Solo aka Darth Caedus in that saga is m absolute favorite. The battle between Jacen and Mara was amazing in it. And it was this Sacrifice. The killing of Mara Ben's mother which would sever his relationship with Ben forever. It was that Sacrifice that was the Sith Equivalent of Jedi Trials that made him Officaly become a Sith lord and take the name Darth Caedus Again Very great Saga. And WOW The art you do is just simply amazing. I would love to see one with Jana training with the Mandalorians to take out her brother

Thanks so much--for the kind comments, and for the hard work you do for all of us, by your delivering of the products we all depend on, all over the country! I've never heard the audio books of LOTF, but some on other forums have mentioned listening to them, and truly enjoying them.

I've often thought about depicting Jaina training with Fett, but just haven't been able to set aside the time to get going with the pencils. As you know from your own work: there's a lot more of it these days, spread over fewer and fewer employees--makes leisure time a precious commodity! Someday, I may be able to find some time to call my own again and get out the tablets and pencils again...we'll see! Thank you again, and may your travels be safe and sane!

Aw, I DID cry buckets when I read this book... Poor Mara, poor Luke and poor, poor Ben... **gets sniffly all over again** I think the emotional tone of the scene was what drove me to draw it--a sort of catharsis, in a way. Thanks for taking a look, anyway (and sorry to drive you to the verge of tears, btw)--and big thanks for faving it!

Some EU writer out there has the guts to kill of Mara Jade (the only EU character, by the way, to make the top 10 favorite character list), but Luke has brushed against death and come clean in nigh every novel.
I find this odd...

When my pal :iconselonian: read that part...well...let's just say she called me and splurted spoilers in this torn voice.

Wonderfully captured, beautifully executed.

I knew this was coming from all the spoilage that occured--but it didn't make losing Mara any easier... **lip quivers**

This moment simply tore out my heart: the young son, while already battle-hardened and way too grown-up for 14, sitting wordlessly beside his dead mother... My muse demanded I draw this, and I did (this was done pretty fast, and with little attention to quality), just so I could see it. I thought about adding in the bottom of Jacen's robes behind Ben, but now I'm glad I didn't...it would have detracted from the emotion of the piece. Thanks much for taking time to look and for the kind words!

It is indeed, and many thanks for taking time to look and comment--it's much appreciated. Despite the horrific loss (to Luke, Ben and a multitude of loyal Mara fans), it was a good book; you should also take a look through :iconbeckrum:'s gallery--she did a heartbreakingly beautiful and tender composite...of Luke with her, after she had been recovered...I still get misty when I look at it...

I'm curious...but--as the publisher now seems bent on knocking off major characters just for effect--I'm also reluctant... I want to see what happens with Ben, mostly; I just dread having to read about Han or Leia or Luke getting offed (it seems inevitable--heroes don't just retire and pass on from old age in the SW 'verse...)... I rather liked "Millennium Falcon," by James Luceno--it also dealt some with the Solo's feelings about losing their last remaining son (even though he'd turned into a monster). We'll see; I'm sort of a rabid fangirly, though--I'll probably see the cover and run slobbering and glassy-eyed to the bookstore! lol! ;)

You don't need to worry about Han Leia or Luke, George Lucas already told them that killing them was off limits.
some do die of old age though Admiral Ackbar did. some of the sources I've read make it seem that as well over as that went they wont be doing so many character knock off for a while because of writers like Micheal A Stackpole and Timothy Zhan were both very up set at the Losses of Anakin and Mara.

Me too! I blubbered like a distraught baby, having to put the book aside for a long while before I read on (Luke's last little contact with her left me choking...); when Ben found her body, it started all over again...thus, the emotional compulsion to put that down on paper... Ditto, big-time! Once again, I had to just set the book aside for a while; when I read it again, I cried again! Very well written, I thought--those moments. I have a good friend on this site, :iconag88:, who is thinking about drawing that scene where Ben sees Mara's Force-ghost--I begged her to do it! I don't know if I could pull that one off--she paints digitally, and I think she'll do a great job of it! I hope she does!

SIDENOTE! Do you know which character I would love to see your interpretation of? Zekk. Just because... your artistic mind is amazing, and I'd love to know how you see him. I've tried drawing Zekk a few times--I've also had a rough time coming to a firm image of him in my own head... Is there an actor or someone who reminds you of Zekk...? I think that's always been the difficulty--not really having a face to apply to the character... I'm drowning in request work right now, so my own drawings are all on the back burner for a while--thank you for the idea, though! :D
