Baron Soontir Fel by FalconFan Baron Soontir Fel by FalconFan
Here's another SW illustration for a fan fiction (I suppose this could also go into the Fan Art category, as Soontir is a "canon character...")--it's of Jag Fel's father, Baron Soontir Fel. I don't have all the details of his character, only what I read in the NJO novels: a former military officer, a man of regal bearing, great courage and conviction. I hope this portrayal fits all of that! ;)

George Lucas owns all things Star Wars, this character, et al!

2H, H, 2B, 3B pencils on smooth surface drawing paper, some Kleenex and tortillons.

I like the details of his hair, face. You draw very well the hair. I like also his expression with a anger, authority. I like the dark background because, it lights only his face. It's a wonderful drawing =)

Thank you once again! This was done very quickly, actually, for a friend who had written a wonderful fanfiction story called "The Family Album," told in a first person POV by the grown daughter of Jagged and Jaina--she had some drawings that another artist had withdrawn permission to use in a LJ setting, and--as the entire piece was based around "family photos," it left her in a dreadful bind. I found a beautiful photo in a magazine advertisement that worked perfectly as a reference for this, and using her description and the passage from her story, I was able to put this together. I have to give credit to the photographer, really, who took the original photo, for the light--this was precisely how it looked in the magazine! I'm glad you like it, though--thanks again for adding another :+fav:!

Aw, thanks! Yeah--I've done oh-so-little of the Imperials...I do have to own-up, though, that this piece was done for a good friend's fan fiction, in which the good Baron was the beloved grandfather of Jag and Jaina's kids (the story was being told from the adult daughter's POV--great stuff!). Of course, this was intended to show him as the stern, retired officer he was--but also as a contrast to the gentle, loving grandfather portrayed in the narrative... In any case, I'm glad it fits for you--I had scant references, as I haven't seen any of the comics he may have been in. I greatly appreciate the visit, comments and the :+fav:!

no problem Baron Fel is a great pilot. He is like Wedge but for the Empire...no wonder wedge's sister married him!

"no problem Baron Fel is a great pilot. He is like Wedge but for the Empire"

I have learned that much about him--I guess that would also explain why his son, Jagged Fel, is also a superior starfighter pilot--it runs in the family! ;)

Hee! :giggle: I invented that--the original photo I worked from for this was of Micael Barishnikov in an ad for Movado watches, and he was clean-faced! I'm so glad it looks like it's supposed to be there--and many warm thanks for looking and commenting! :D

:O

I go for a while and you come up with this!?

I love you!

Soontir Fel is in my top 10 favourite characters, alongside Thrawn, Roan Fel III and various others!

You've caught him so perfectly, and his hair is GREY! Thank God someone pays attention to age and it's general effects on humans great and small!

A superb piece! I heartily applaud you!

Glad you like this! It's actually for a good friend, who had a wonderful fan fiction story (centered around "holos"--it's a great story!) in need of a portrait of Soontir at a "grandfatherly age." I referenced only the previous portrait, and none of the "official" images of him--I'm so lucky he resembles Soontir at all! Thanks for the "gush"--it's very much appreciated! :D

Now just how many pictures of Baron Fel have I seen around here? ONE! and it's right here, and it's awesome. :D Like I said, you're the champion of underappreciated Star Wars characters.

(How on earth do you get that skin texture anyway? all the texture I've ever gotten is the grain of the paper... if it even shows up at all).

Aw, thanks =Far! **hugs** This was actually for a friend that needed a picture of Soontir for her fan fiction, in which the Baron's granddaughter is telling stories around "holos" in their family album. It's a great story, and I'd be happy to link you to it, if you're at all interested... I also have a link to a pen-and-ink artist over at TF.N that's REALLY the champion of underappreciated SW characters--he even drew GONK! :boogie:

"How on earth do you get that skin texture anyway? all the texture I've ever gotten is the grain of the paper..."

HA!! It IS the paper texture! lol! It's all in how you rub the graphite around once it's down (I like to go lightly at first, in the same direction as the planes of the face, like "down" the nose, "diagonally" across the cheekbones, etc., then use the Kleenex a little harder the second time). The heavier the grain of the paper, the less work it takes to pull up that texture. I like smooth grained papers, so it takes more time and effort, but the total effect is more what I want... So yeah--go with your favorite papers, do some smudging/smoothing and see how that works for you! ;) :D

Thanks again for looking, and especially for the :+fav:!

Soontir is a character that figures more in some comics, in the X-wing novels, and a bit in the NJO books (Vision of the Future, I think...). This piece was done for a fan fiction story (for a good friend), about the extended Fel/Solo families (in her story, Jaina and Jag marry and have kids--the narrative is told from the POV of their grown daughter, Nawra--great story!--I can give you a link if you'd like one!). I'm glad you like this, and I appreciate the visit and comment! :D

I love this! He looks really stern and "military", if you know what I mean. I like your shading here, especially on his right eye, it's amazing. I think the dark background works really well too, the contrast and everything. The only thing that I think is a bit off is his left cheek (beneath the dead eye), it looks a bit flat... not much, just a little, like. Apart from that this is a really good drawing, especially since you did it from descriptions in the NJO. The only actual pictures I've seen of him are the ones in the Rogue Squadron comics, and I think on the Japanese cover of one of the NJO books (if you've not checked those out, do, the artwork is amazing!). Okay, now I'm done blathering on about this... terrific work, keep it up! :D

Many thanks for the critique--you know, I've been studying this piece and something was bothering me about it--I think you got it exactly right--I'll have to go at it again and see if I can correct the problem... And I had a reference for this (a photo from a magazine), so it wasn't purely from the descriptions--I don't think there's any way I could get such dramatic shading correct without a reference! ;) I very much appreciate the critique--thanks so much--and the comments!

The background is wonderful... it looks great so dark.
I do feel like if it was a little stiffer than your other drawings. Maybe 'cause he's older than the other ones...

Thank you for the visit and comments--and actually, this was meant to be more "formal" or perhaps "stiff:" the story surrounding this portrait brings out the profound contrast between the hard-looking man we see here and the "inner man," with weaknesses and vulnerabilities just like all of us. So if he looks stiff, then that works! ;) Thanks again!
